Deerfield, Ill., January 5, 2022 – Walgreens is now offering Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine and booster doses to an expanded patient population. All individuals 12 and older who received their primary vaccination series with Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine can now schedule a booster shot at Walgreens five months after their second dose. An additional primary dose is also available for eligible, immunocompromised children ages 5-11 who received Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. This reflects new guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week and updates from the Food and Drug Administration.

For the best experience, individuals are highly encouraged to use the Walgreens app or visit Walgreens.com/ScheduleVaccine to secure a vaccination appointment in advance. Patients younger than 18 years old must have a parent or guardian present to sign the consent form at the time of immunization.*

What You Need to Know About Expanded Guidance
  • Boosters for Individuals 12 and Older: Children 12-15 who completed their Pfizer COVID-19 primary vaccine series at least five months ago are now eligible to receive a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine booster shot, per new guidance from the CDC. This is in addition to those 16 and older who are recommended to receive boosters.
  • Shortened Booster Interval for Individuals 12 and Older: All individuals 12 and older who completed their primary vaccination series of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine are now eligible to receive a booster shot five months after their second dose. The FDA recommended shortening the interval from six months to five months based on newly submitted data that indicates a booster dose of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine may safely provide better protection sooner for individuals against the highly transmissible Omicron variant. Intervals for those receiving Moderna or Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 boosters have not changed from previous guidance.
  • Additional Primary Dose for Immunocompromised Children Ages 5-11: Children 5-11 who are moderately or severely immunocompromised are now eligible to receive an additional primary dose of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine 28 days following their second dose. Children 5-11 who are fully vaccinated and are not immunocompromised are not eligible for a booster at this time.
