Walgreens Encourages All Americans to Participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

More Than 3 Million Pounds of Unwanted Medication Collected
DEERFIELD, Ill., April 23, 2021 – As part of its continuing effort to combat drug abuse, Walgreens will again participate in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day held on April 24 where select Walgreens stores throughout the country will serve as a drop-off point for law enforcement to collect unwanted, unused or expired medications for safe disposal. Since the inception of its safe medication disposal program in 2016, Walgreens has collected and properly disposed of 3.1 million pounds, or 1,550 tons, of unwanted or unused patient medication.

Walgreens is leading the fight against prescription drug abuse with programs to help curb the misuse of medications and reduce the rise in overdose deaths. There are currently 1,415 kiosk locations across 46 states including Washington, DC.
Through a collaboration with Google, Walgreens locations with drug disposal options can quickly and easily be found by searching for ’drug drop off near me’ or ‘medication disposal near me,’ in Google or Google Maps. Kiosk locations can also be found via the Walgreens.com Store Locator filter for ‘Medication Disposal.’

Walgreens safe medication disposal kiosks provide a convenient way to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medication at no cost, year-round. Kiosks are available during regular pharmacy hours and offer one of the best ways to ensure medications are not accidentally used or intentionally misused by someone else. All Walgreens pharmacies without safe medication disposal kiosks offer DisposeRx or other drug disposal options, available year-round upon request at the pharmacy counter. Both programs make the disposal of medications — including opioids and other controlled substances — easier and more convenient.
