Teaming Up to Tackle COVID-19 on Super Bowl Weekend

Just one day before the Los Angeles Rams conquered the Cincinnati Bengals to win the National Football League’s (NFL) Super Bowl LVI, Walgreens was scoring points off the field in the fight against the pandemic.

On Saturday, Feb. 12, Walgreens, along with Western Dental & Orthodontics and Water and Power Community Credit Union (WPCCU), teamed up with the NFL Alumni Association’s Southern California Chapter for a vaccine clinic that provided free COVID-19 vaccines and boosters, flu shots and COVID-19 antigen testing in Los Angeles’ Inglewood community. The day consisted of family fun and photos with a host of former NFL players

“Walgreens is extremely grateful to our partners for coming together to provide access to vaccines during the excitement of Super Bowl weekend,” said Hector Perez, director of pharmacy and retail operations for Walgreens Los Angeles region. “Ensuring easy access is one of the best ways that we can stop the spread.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 75.9% of eligible adults say they’ve received at least one dose or more of COVID-vaccine. However across many medically underserved areas throughout Los Angeles – like parts of the Inglewood community and more – vaccination rates lag as much as 30% behind those of more affluent areas. This collaboration worked to help narrow this gap by bringing vaccinations and testing resources directly to some of Los Angeles county’s hardest hit communities.

The event combined COVID-19 vaccines provided by Walgreens along with dental health education provided by Western Dental and financial literacy offerings provided by WPCCU. The NFL Alumni Association is a nonprofit organization founded in 1967 and composed of former NFL players, coaches, team staff members and associate members who work voluntarily to raise funds for youth-oriented causes and engage in hands-on service to foster the development of "youth through sports and sports through youth."
