Walgreens Valparaiso, Ind. Return Center Recertified, Awarded Indiana Department of Labor's Highest Designation for Workplace Safety

DEERFIELD, Ill., Oct. 27, 2011 - Walgreens (NYSE, NASDAQ: WAG) today announced that its return center in Valparaiso, Ind. has been recertified as a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star Award site from the Indiana Department of Labor (IDOL). The VPP Star Award is IDOL’s highest designation for workplace safety and recognizes businesses that show excellence in occupational safety and health. As part of the review process, IDOL evaluates past records, examines the facility’s written safety and health management plan, conducts a detailed on-site evaluation and evaluates ongoing safety performance. Team member participation in health and safety activities and ergonomics are also factored into the IDOL assessment.

“This award is a clear example of our commitment to the well-being of our team members and our work together to go above and beyond required standards,” said Walgreens return center manager Teri Myers. “I couldn’t be prouder of our team’s accomplishment and look forward to continuing our leadership in this area for years to come.”

IDOL Deputy Commissioner Jeffry S. Carter presented the award to Walgreens executives and team members at the return center Thursday morning.

“The Indiana Department of Labor is always pleased to recognize and provide ongoing support to Hoosier employers who dedicate themselves to operating exemplary safety and health management systems,” said IDOL Commissioner Lori Torres.”

The Walgreens Valparaiso return center received its original VPP Star Award in 2008 and will be recertified for another three years. The Walgreens distribution center in Waxahachie, Texas, also received the VPP Star Award last year from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
