Walgreens Recognizes Its More Than 75,000 Pharmacy Professionals for Their Role in Improving Patient Health During American Pharmacists Month

Company Expands Team of Specialized Pharmacists Dedicated to Improving Health Outcomes
DEERFIELD, Ill. Sept. 26, 2019 – Walgreens is recognizing its team of more than 75,000 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians for their dedication to improving the health and well-being of patients as part of American Pharmacists Month throughout October. As some of the most accessible and trusted providers on the frontlines of care in the community, the Walgreens pharmacy team provides patients convenient and affordable access to care through services like medication therapy management, recommending and administering vaccinations, ensuring medication adherence and helping to identify potential gaps in care.

“Walgreens pharmacists understand health care is best when it’s local and personalized, making them an invaluable partner in patient care,” said Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of operations. “As their scope of services continues to expand, Walgreens pharmacists are there to provide care whenever and however patients need – whether it be through our retail pharmacy locations, our locally-based specialty pharmacies or our 24/7 chat tool. That’s why it’s so important to recognize the commitment and support that our pharmacists provide to their communities every day.”

While patient outcomes are the responsibility of all Walgreens pharmacists, the company recently created a new role solely dedicated to driving improved patient outcomes. These Health Outcomes Pharmacists foster relationships with the surrounding medical community and provide high-touch, clinical intervention programs to the patients that need them the most. Walgreens is expanding its team of 150 Health Outcomes Pharmacists in communities across the nation after preliminary results from the program showed improved medication adherence and high patient satisfaction rates.

Throughout the month of October, Walgreens is also honoring female pharmacists – who make up more than 60 percent of the company’s pharmacists – for their dedication to caring for patients and serving their community on National Women Pharmacists Day (October 12). Walgreens also recognizes the pharmacy technicians who are integral to supporting both pharmacists and patients on National Pharmacy Technician Day (October 15).

The Walgreens pharmacist network also includes specially trained pharmacists across more than 300 community-based specialty pharmacies with experience providing care for patients with complex conditions, including HIV, inflammatory conditions, hepatitis C, oncology, infertility, organ transplant and cystic fibrosis. Walgreens also has an expansive team of pharmacy staff working behind the scenes to ensure patients always have the care they need. This includes pharmacists and specialists helping patients through call center support and the 24/7 Pharmacist Chat tool available on the Walgreens app and website.
