Steve Turner is senior vice president and chief information officer for Walgreen Co., based in Deerfield, Illinois. He is responsible for leading the information technology function and the company’s consumer-facing innovation efforts.
Prior to becoming CIO in April 2017, Turner served as Walgreens vice president of service delivery & infrastructure, leading the delivery and operations of information technology infrastructure including data centers, storage, databases, telecom, data networks, office automation and collaboration technologies. He has also held Walgreens leadership roles in data analytics and digital technologies.
As senior director of Walgreens digital and mobile technology, Turner initiated and led Walgreens first implementation of Hadoop (Big Data). In this position he also led a cross-company task force to explore personalization capabilities which helped the company expand to new growth opportunities. Turner let digital product portfolio management and transformed product deliver to an agile approach. This work increased delivery velocity and has provided more responsive customer solutions. Turner joined Walgreens in 2009 as director of digital site operations, where he established and led the Walgreens digital operations team to operate the company’s online business.
Before joining Walgreens, he spent six years at Orbitz holding various operations and technology leadership roles with increasing responsibility including director of operations. Prior to that, Turner worked at Intuit where he managed customer-facing and back office networks, as well as Unix/Linux-based services that included DNS, email transport and information security.
Earlier in his career, he had engineering roles as a contractor for the Department of Defense. In addition, Turner served in the U.S. Navy as a cryptologic technician.
Turner earned an undergraduate degree in computer science from Chapman University and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
