Creation of Walgreens

Charles R. Walgreen Sr. purchased the Chicago drugstore where he had worked as a pharmacist — and that started the Walgreen chain. The first prescription delivery was made.



Invention of the malted milkshake

Walgreens invented the malted milkshake. Customers stood three and four deep around the soda fountain to buy the “double-rich chocolate malted milk.�



Rollout of child-restraint containers

Walgreens became the first major drug chain to put its prescriptions into child-resistant containers, long before it was required by law.



Technology-connected pharmacies

The first Intercom computers were installed in five Walgreen pharmacies in Des Moines, Iowa. This was the initial step toward making Walgreens the first drugstore chain to connect all its pharmacy departments via satellite.



Launch of drive-thru pharmacy

Walgreens opened the first drive-thru pharmacy.



Launch of online pharmacy launched a comprehensive online pharmacy, offering customers a convenient and secure way to take care of many health care needs online.



Pharmacy prescription labels in multiple languages

Walgreens became the first drugstore chain to offer prescription labels in multiple languages chainwide. Today, labels are printed in 14 languages.



Acquisition of Take Care Health Systems

Walgreens acquired Take Care Health Systems, a provider of retail health care clinics and worksite health and wellness centers.



Creation of Walgreens Boots Alliance

Walgreens completed its strategic merger with Alliance Boots to form Walgreens Boots Alliance, the first global pharmacy-led, health and wellbeing enterprise.



Acquisition of Rite Aid stores

WBA purchased 1,932 stores, three distribution centers and related inventory from Rite Aid Corporation.



Strategic partnerships

WBA established strategic partnerships with a range of health, retail and convenience market leaders, such as Alibaba, Birchbox, FedEx, Kroger, LabCorp, Sprint and Verily, to bring greater value, convenience and omni-channel solutions to customers and patients.



Strategic partnership with Microsoft

WBA and Microsoft joined forces to develop new health care delivery models, technology and retail innovations to advance and improve the future of health care.

Customers can search and the Walgreens mobile app to “clip” digital coupons to their accounts, to be applied automatically online and in stores. And with Text2Clip, customers can text a keyword and receive all related coupons instantly.

Ship to Store

We offer free shipping to any Walgreens store with no minimum online purchase, allowing customers to shop our expanded online selection and pick up their order at their convenient neighborhood store.

Find Care

Walgreens introduced a digital platform and marketplace called Find Care that helps connect the company’s millions of mobile and online visitors to health care services at Walgreens stores and a growing selection of providers in the community. Patients can receive a variety of services including video chatting with a doctor and talking to a therapist online, all from the Walgreens mobile app.
