DEERFIELD, Ill., June 02, 2009 - Walgreens (NYSE: WAG)(NASDAQ: WAG) had May sales of $5,370,200,000, an increase of 6.1 percent from $5,060,627,000 for the same month in 2008. Sales in comparable stores (those open at least a year) increased 1.0 percent. Comparable store front-end sales increased 0.2 percent versus last year’s increase of 6.0 percent.
May pharmacy sales increased 6.3 percent, while comparable pharmacy sales increased 1.5 percent. Comparable pharmacy sales were negatively impacted by 4.5 percentage points due to generic drug introductions in the last 12 months.
Prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased 2.8 percent in May, including 1.7 percentage points due to more patients filling 90-day prescriptions, which are counted as three 30-day prescriptions. This better reflects true consumption and is consistent with industry standards. Pharmacy sales accounted for 65.0 percent of total sales for the month.
Calendar day shifts had a negative impact on the month, as pharmacy patients fill more prescriptions during the week than on weekends. This year, May had one fewer weekday compared to May last year. Calendar shifts negatively impacted total comparable store sales by 1.4 percentage points, comparable pharmacy sales by 2.1 percentage points and prescriptions filled in comparable stores by 2.0 percentage points.
Calendar year-to-date sales were $26,566,813,000, an increase of 6.7 percent from $24,896,494,000, in 2008.
Fiscal 2009 year-to-date sales for the nine months were $47,637,674,000, up 7.2 percent from $44,437,206,000. Comparable store sales for the fiscal year to date increased 1.9 percent.
Walgreens opened 43 stores during May, including four relocations, acquired 38 stores and closed three.
At May 31, Walgreens operated 7,361 locations in 49 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. That includes 6,857 drugstores, 605 more than a year ago, including 73 stores acquired over the last 12 months. The company also operates worksite health centers, home care facilities and specialty, institutional and mail service pharmacies. Its Take Care Health Systems subsidiary manages 716 in-store convenient care clinics and worksite health and wellness centers. Franchisees of Option Care, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Walgreens, are not included in Walgreens location or store count.

Comparable stores are defined as those drugstore locations open for at least 12 consecutive months without closure for seven or more consecutive days and without a major remodel or a natural disaster in the past 12 months. Relocated and acquired stores are not included as comparable stores for the first 12 months after the relocation or acquisition.
